Early morning in mid-September we popped up in the Ponce lobby to put community members’ nursing knowledge to the ultimate test via everyone’s favorite quiz game show, Jeopardy!

Over complimentary coffee and doughnuts, Emory School of Nursing (SON) nursing students and professors accepted the challenge with sheer enthusiasm, wanting to show off their healthcare know-how by picking the highest point values and hardest categories. Professors and simulation leaders watched the nursing newbies give their best shot first, before demonstrating their own skills.

Notably, we also had participation from our other healthcare-focused tenants, such as iResearch Atlanta, who were almost as excited by the game as they were for the treats from Revolution Doughnuts & Coffee! The same could be said for the participants from Utility, who were game to play, despite not having a focus in healthcare.

What might have been most exciting that day was participation from some special visitors, nurses from Atlanta’s Veterans Affair Medical Center (VAMC). These specialized healthcare professionals undergo training in the Emory SON simulation labs and happened to be there that fateful day! Which should come as no surprise, really, since Decatur is home to the primary location of the VAMC, with more than 20 additional outpatient centers throughout Atlanta.

Alongside offering care and treatments, the VAMC facilities also conduct research on a wide range of medical conditions. Their innovative approach to healthcare is a perfect example of the work taking place right in our own neighborhood! More so, the trainees were grateful for the opportunity to connect with the students and to enjoy a break between their lessons.

The game of Jeopardy! also inspired some students to gamify their school work, instead of using traditional digital platforms to review their notes and vocabulary.

All in all, the Pop-Up served as a great way to engage with current Emory students, visiting healthcare professionals, and additional tenants that all help make up the vibrant and innovative community of 250 E Ponce
